Before the Julian and Gregorian eras, October was the eighth month on the Roman calendar. Octo means eight in Latin. At the time, there were just ten months. In 700 BC, Numa Pompilius added January and February to the calendar. This adjustment more correctly represented the length of a year on Earth. As a result, October became the tenth month in the calendar. While other months have had days added or withdrawn, October has always had 31 days.
